Rare Error Star Note Pair Sells for $2,925 at Auction

2013 Matched Error Star Note Pair Fetches Top Dollar at GreatCollections Auction

The highly anticipated auction of the 2013 $1 Federal Reserve matched star note pair, with serial number B06834537*, concluded last night on GreatCollections with a final price of $2,600. The listing, which garnered 369 views and was tracked by 21 members, ended with a total cost to the buyer of $2,925, including the buyer’s fee.

The story behind this unique pair is a testament to the success of Project 2013B. The notes are considered ultra-rare due to a printing error that resulted in two different Federal Reserve Notes—an FR-3001-B★ from Washington, DC, and an FR-3002-B★ from Fort Worth—bearing the same serial number. The pair was discovered by two different Project 2013B members, with one note found in Georgia and its mate located in Montana. This discovery, officially confirmed by Project 2013B on May 3, 2025, marked the 28th matched set confirmed that year. The notes were subsequently graded by PCGS, with one note receiving a grade of Very Fine 20 and the other a Choice Very Fine 35.

The result not only reflects the scarcity of these error notes but also the strong market demand for them. It shows that even with a high buyer's fee, collectors are willing to invest in truly unique and well-documented pieces of currency history. The total sales of production error bills now stands at $196,983.85.
