Ultimate Guide: Identifying Rare 2013 Series $1 Bills with Duplicated Serial Numbers

Project 2013B receives between 50 to over 200 serial number submissions daily. However, it is not uncommon for 15% to 30% of these submissions to be rejected. The most common reasons for rejection are that the serial number does not fall within the two specified ranges where duplicated serial number errors have been identified, or the bill is not from the 2013 series. By utilizing the frontplate and backplate information submitted, it can be determined whether the bill is indeed a 2013 series or even if it is a dollar bill.

In light of these issues, I have created an infographic designed to assist individuals, particularly non-collectors, in identifying which of their dollar bills may feature the duplicated serial number production error. This graphic is intended to be shared on social media platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram, or any other channels you use, to help raise awareness and provide guidance on this matter.

Fancy serial numbers are a fascinating aspect of numismatics that captures the interest of collectors and hobbyists alike. These unique sequences, found on banknotes and other serialized items, include patterns such as binary, repeater, radar, and star notes. Each pattern holds its own charm and rarity, making the hunt for these special numbers an exciting and rewarding experience. Collectors often pay a premium for these distinctive serial numbers.

Binary serial numbers are a subset of fancy serial numbers that hold a special allure for collectors and enthusiasts. These numbers exclusively comprise only two digits, usually 0 and 1, creating a visually striking pattern. The appeal lies in their rarity and the clean, symmetrical appearance of the numbers. Collectors often seek out binary serial numbers for their uniqueness, as they add an element of excitement and exclusivity to their collections. Whether on banknotes, coins, or other serialized items, binary serial numbers are a fascinating niche in the world of numismatics.

The value of binary serial numbers can significantly exceed their face value, depending on their condition and the item they are printed on. Enthusiasts are willing to pay a premium for these rare finds, making them a worthwhile pursuit for both novice and seasoned collectors.

So what does this mean regarding 2013B duplicated serial number star notes? Added value! Anything that differentiates your serial number from a random 'average' serial number usually gets a higher bid.

While all of the serial numbers are considered Binary, only item #7 is considered a True Binary serial number, as it consists of only 1’s and zeros, reflecting the fundamental principles of binary code used in computing which this type of fancy serial number gets its name from. It would also get a boost in value as the serial number is considered a 'low serial number'.

Binary Serial Number Values

Any website, or publication that estimates the value of a banknote with a binary serial number is just that... an estimate. The best estimate is whatever one recently sold for whether it be eBay or a snooty auction site like Heritage Auctions. This is further convoluted by the condition of the bill, the denomination, the series, and sometimes just how creative the listing title is.

The following is a smattering of values found on eBay and Heritage Auctions, as well as variations of binary serial numbers.  From low value, to inexplicable, to high value.  As always, your results may vary!

Not a true binary, but a binary nonetheless. Turned $1 into $5 (minus fees, shipping, etc). Condition matters.

Another binary, that might of eeked out a higher price. The ending digits that appear higher are sometimes referred to as a 'Gas Pump' bill... resembling the rolling digits on older gas pumps.

A radar binary. The serial number reads the same from either direction. Also known as a palindrome.

Quads Binary - Any digit that appears 4-in-a-row is referred to as a quad. Two Quads is better than one, by far.

A Super-Low Binary. Often just called a Low-Serial Number as the binary aspect is considered inherent.

In addition to Low Serial Numbers, High Serial numbers command a premium as well.

This one was not described as a binary on the certification, so I suspect the majority of the value is the rarity and condition of the bill itself. Old bills used fewer digits so binaries are easier to find.

So there you have it.  The many variations of Binary serial numbers.
