Bad Timing or Underperformance?

Pair 05395256 sells for $3002

I think the final bidder got a deal

After a flurry of FIVE auctions in which the average selling price for a complete pair of Duplicate Serial Number 2013B star notes was $5787, the pair above sold for a disappointing $3002.   The prior five auctions fetched an average price of $5,287 and took place between April 9th and May 17th; 76% more.

The next busiest flurry of auctions was back in the March-May period of 2022.  Those auctions were erratic fetching the owners $9301, $3705, and a 'No bid'.

Price of Convenience?

Great Collections has only auction 2 completed pairs, with the first fetching $4300.  If you take the average of the 2 grades for the two bills, the average grade for the SN 05395256 pair was a 48 (out of a perfect 70).  This was actually a higher average than the preceding 5 auctioned pairs whose average grade ranged from 27.5 to 47.

A contact at Great Collections told me the delay between them getting the pair back from the grading company to the auction date was intentional as they felt their auction might be too close to a prior auction  ( I assume he meant the one that took place at Heritage ).  On the other hand two pairs sold on Ebay for a minimum of $4899 with the two auctions separated by only 10 days.

Before jumping to the conclusion of, "Awwww man, Great Collections sucks!" keep in mind that prices for completed pairs is still erratic.  I tried graphing the price realized versus the average grade of the bill, and there was no rhyme or reason to the graph  (and I used to work a lot with graphs, curve-fitting, and looking for cause-effect relationships).  See graph below.  For non-math nerds, a value of less than 0.5 means that half the time the variability observed in the target variable is explained by the regression model.  Look at me, using big words!

With what I would estimate as about half of the registered bill owners at Project 2013B being non-collectors, Great Collections is still my go-to suggestion for a one-stop shop as far as cases where both owners just want to sell their bill for cash.  Each bill owner sends their bill to Great Collections by registered mail, and Great Collections handles the rest; combining the two bills as a complete pair, having those bills graded as a complete pair, followed by the actual auction.   The alternative, for a non-collector is the daunting task of having to possibly buy the bill off of the other guy (safely), getting the pair graded, then putting it up for auction, and deciding which auction house, and so on. That's a lot of processes that the average person on the street would never have experience in dealing with.

It's hard to say if the next Great Collections auction will also under-perform.  When two people are informed that they have a matching pair, the negotiations begin was to what they want to do.  More often than not, they both want to sell.  There are several cases where negotiations end in a total standoff.  So what is worse?  A possible under-performing auction result, or zero?  Ebay has been good as of late, but it was only back last year that there were two auctions where a pair did not even get a bid; and those 2 auctions were 4 months apart.

Live Auction for Matched Pair ends this Sunday

05395256* Pair

The calm before the storm?

I suspect the bids will start going up in the last hour of this auction on Sunday night. A previous auction on Great Collections hovered around $1000 for weeks before a final sniper bid of  $5,500 in the last minute.

Auction Roundup: 3 more complete pairs sold at auction

Three pairs go to market

All 3 happened to go to Ebay, and seemed to shake off the curse of zero bids which happened twice back in 2022 (Auction History).

All three auctions occured on Ebay

SN 05445594*

This completed pair was sold on April 9th, and went for $5,138. The pair was made possible when it was discovered in the Project 2013B database back on Februrary 11th (LINK).  Only two months later it sold, so perhaps the backlog at PMG to get bills graded is no longer the 90-120 days?

Full graded and encapsulated in one holder

Probably the first graded pair to mention Project 2013B !

SN 03477748*

This is another pair brought together by Project 2013B; this one was first verified back on May 24, 2022 [LINK].  This pair is unique in that the bills were graded individually (probably by seperate individuals), so there is no mention of 'Duplicate Serial Number' or 'Production Error' or preferrably 'Project 2013B'.  Still, the pair managed to sell for $4,899.

Both bills are now owned by one brother from a different mother.

Suprisingly this is the lowest serial numbered pair that I am aware of.  There have still been no pairs discovered in the 1st run of Duplicate Serial Number error which falls in the serial number range of 0000001 to 00250000. There are some pairs in this range in the database, but they are STILL waiting on at least 1 bill owner to contact Project 2013B.  Refer to the Matchmaking page... I could be waiting to hear from you!  One of those serial numbers is 00002013!  If that pair ever gets put together, I would expect it to have at least some premium given to the serial number that matches the series year!

SN 06272795*

February seemed to be a good month for completed pairs being discovered and sold within a 3 month window.  Verified on February 16th [Link], this pair went on to sell for $5,500 on Ebay.

Fairly wrinkly bills, but still brought in $5500

Summary

So there you have it,  3 pairs auctioned on Ebay for a total of $15,537

Matched Pair up for auction

Two dudes who are spearheading the 'process' of getting their matched pair both granding company and up for auction have endured months of delay from both the backlog at PMG and the auction house itself.  Now their pair is officially up for auction at https://bit.ly/3nZ3nwc

The pair was originally discovered by Project 2013B back in January (see post).

The pair back when the bills lead separate empty lives

Here are the bills now, all graded and certifed, and ready for their moment in the sun:

From common everyday dollar bills to fame and fortune

The auction ends in 22 days, on Sun, Jun 04, 2023 06:30:30 PM Pacific Time

As posted on the May 5th post, a different pair with lower grades of 40 and 25 recently sold for $6,600 (including buyer's premium).

CORRECTION! Final price on May 5th auction was $6,600!

CORRECTION

Correction.  No offense to Ricardo

A lesson in not trusting your browser's refresh button.  Yesterday I quoted the final price (after auction fees) for a matched pair to be $5,880.  Turns out my screen shot did not reflect a final bid that happened sometime in the last 4 seconds!

Screenshot after I refreshed my screen after auction apparently ended.

One of the bill owners reached out and informed me of this.  Here is his screenshot directly from his account at Heritage Auctions (see below).  Final price, after auction fees to the bidder, was $6,600.

Final auction price after last second sniper bid.

Project 2013B matched pair sells for $6,600 at auction

Auction Results

To the best of my knowledge, this is the lowest graded matched pair ever to go to auction, but still yielded an impressive final bid of $5,500 with the buying shelling out a total of $6,600 after the buyer's premium is factored in.

...with 4 seconds to go but...

A last second bit pushed the price up and won.  Final bid $5,500 (without auction fee)

The bills that made up the matched pair were graded 40 and 25 respectively, on a grading scale where 'perfect' is a 70, and a 1 being "poor" or "Poor banknotes must be identifiable by catalog number. It is unusual for a banknote to circulate to the point of becoming Poor from a wear standpoint. These banknotes will be extremely worn with the paper virtually falling apart. Most banknotes acquire repairs before this point. An unrepaired Poor is an extreme rarity."

Initial Discovery

This pair was Project 2013B's 15th confirmed match; photo confirmation was posted on this blog back on October 15th of last year. [LINK]

Here's the image of the pair when it was first detected and verified by this project.  At this point each bill were still physically apart by 100s of miles, and ungraded.  The DC note in particular, according to its owner was "caught in the wild at a pizza shop"

From pizza place to Heritage Auctions

SOLD! For $4300

going... going...

gone!

For 14 hours the price stayed at a constant $3600. With less than a minute left the price change twice and sold for $4300. And here I thought only Ebay was prone to sniping.
Slowly we are getting a picture of how much a matched pair is worth in various combinations of grades. You can check out the running list of past auctions here:

Still, it doesn't stop some owners from aiming for the moon as this current Ebay 'Buy It Now' auction shows:
When you wish upon a star....

The pair that sold last night were very close to the same condition, with the better condition note only being 2 grades lower. Not sure a different of 2 grades would warrant an extra $115,699.00, but if they can get it, then good for them.

The pair that sold last night for $4300. Note how PCGS calls it a 'Production Error' while PMG calls it a 'Duplicate Serial Number'
