The story behind this unique pair is a testament to the success of Project 2013B. The notes are considered ultra-rare due to a printing error that resulted in two different Federal Reserve Notes—an FR-3001-B★ from Washington, DC, and an FR-3002-B★ from Fort Worth—bearing the same serial number. The pair was discovered by two different Project 2013B members, with one note found in Georgia and its mate located in Montana. This discovery, officially confirmed by Project 2013B on May 3, 2025, marked the 28th matched set confirmed that year. The notes were subsequently graded by PCGS, with one note receiving a grade of Very Fine 20 and the other a Choice Very Fine 35.

A true modern currency rarity is on the block this week at GreatCollections — a matched pair of 2013B $1 Federal Reserve star notes with identical serial numbers, one printed in Fort Worth and the other in Washington, D.C. The auction closes this Sunday, giving collectors just days to bid on this remarkable find.

This isn’t just any matched pair — it was originally discovered through Project 2013B, the matching effort that has been uniting duplicate-serial-number star notes since 2021.

From Discovery to Auction

This pair represents Project 2013B’s 33rd confirmed match of 2025 and the 176th match overall since the project began, bringing the total known confirmed pairs to 189.

The Fort Worth-printed note was submitted by member 6Uk2l, a contributor with 162 serial number entries in the database. Its Washington, D.C.-printed twin came from member a7FS, who has logged 260 entries.

The two notes had very different journeys:

• Fort Worth note: Found in California by 6Uk2l.

• Washington, D.C. note: Found in Massachusetts by a7FS, who discovered it while working at a gas station.

As a7FS explained:

"I collected the majority of my star notes while working at a gas station in Massachusetts. It wasn't until years later after saving about 1600 of them that I found out about this error. From those I had about 240 to enter here in the website, and the rest is history with this being my 5th match! I've been the buyer and the seller on pairs, and it's fun either way!! Thanks for the hard work put into your website, and helping the collecting world unite on this cool error!"

After the match was confirmed, the two owners agreed to bring their notes together and place the matched set into the marketplace — a decision that now offers collectors the rare chance to own both halves of this printing anomaly.
