Rare 2013 NY Federal Reserve $1 error star note pair, Rios‑Lew, PMG graded VF‐25 & VF‐30. Duplicate serial numbers collectible currency.

This exceptional matched pair of 2013 New York Federal Reserve $1 “star note” error bills (Fr. 3001-B★ and Fr. 3002-B★), each bearing the rare duplicate serial number and professionally graded PCGS Very Fine 30, and Very Fine 25, is now live in a GreatCollections auction—with only 4 bids so far and set to close on Sunday, July 6th, 2025 at 7:50 PM PT.  Last month was the last time a pair graded 30/25 sold at Great Collections. Final bid at that auction was for $1670 (before the 12.5 percent buyer's premium). At the time of this writing, the current pair up for auction is currently sitting at $775.

A recent development in the field of currency collecting saw a Series 2013 matched pair dollar bills, bearing the serial number B08525883, successfully auctioned last Sunday for $1660, plus a 10% buyer's fee. This particular set of Star Notes is a prime example of rare error currency, notably achieving the fifth-highest price among fourteen pairs of comparable graded condition. This outcome further highlights the robust market for such specialized numismatic items. This remarkable pair, recognized as a prime example of unique collectible currency errors, was first identified on February 13, 2024, a process that underscores the detailed methodologies involved in how to identify rare dollar bills. The co-owners of these banknotes strategically utilized Project 2013B to facilitate their professional grading and subsequent successful auction at GreatCollections, thereby bringing another significant historical currency pair to the collecting community.

GreatCollections Auction Spotlight: Matched Pair 08525883 $1 Star Notes (VF 25) Set for June 15, 2025

A stunning PCGS graded matched pair of 2013 $1 star notes, both VF 25.

This exciting discovery marks the 15th matched pair of 2025 and the 158th identified by Project 2013B since its inception in 2021, underscoring the ongoing allure of collectible U.S. dollar bills. This particular pair of 2013B Star Notes, each confirmed by photo proof from their respective co-owners, brings a unique backstory to the world of rare currency. 

 The 'Fort Worth' printed note was registered in 2025 by Project 2013B member Gri40, an avid collector from Florida. Gri40, inspired by Eric Miller on TikTok, developed a passion for hunting star notes and unique serial numbers, often acquiring new notes through their son's work at Papa John's. The 'Washington DC' printed counterpart was registered earlier, in 2024, by member o4iJY, who has a more extensive history with the project, having submitted a significant 27 serial numbers to the database. This collaboration between collectors, one relatively new and the other more seasoned, beautifully illustrates the community aspect of Project 2013B.
