NEW Dead Wood Policy

Dead Wood Policy

A long overdue policy in dealing with people who I have emailed informing them that they have a potential match to their bill's serial number and who have either not responded in over a year, or evaded providing photo proof that they own the bill they registered in my database (also known as 'The List').

ANYONE NOT RESPONDING TO MY VARIOUS ATTEMPTS
TO CONTACT YOU OVER THE SPAN OF 1 YEAR WILL AUTOMATICALLY
BE REMOVED FROM THE LIST. NO EXCEPTIONS. I DO NOT CARE IF YOU
HAVE 1 OR 1000 BILLS REGISTERED; YOU HAVE WASTED BOTH MY TIME
AND THE TIME OF THE OTHER PERSON THAT HAS THE MATCHING BILL TO
TO THE BILL THAT YOUR SUPPOSEDLY HAVE; NOT TO MENTION RAISING
THEIR HOPES THAT THEY OWN HALF OF A MATCHED PAIR!

The matchmaking table has been updated as such, and the various people and their serial number removed from the database.  They also get to be part of the new 'Hall of Shame' at the bottom of the webpage. Congratulations, wanker!

Matched Pair up for auction

Two dudes who are spearheading the 'process' of getting their matched pair both granding company and up for auction have endured months of delay from both the backlog at PMG and the auction house itself.  Now their pair is officially up for auction at https://bit.ly/3nZ3nwc

The pair was originally discovered by Project 2013B back in January (see post).

The pair back when the bills lead separate empty lives

Here are the bills now, all graded and certifed, and ready for their moment in the sun:

From common everyday dollar bills to fame and fortune

The auction ends in 22 days, on Sun, Jun 04, 2023 06:30:30 PM Pacific Time

As posted on the May 5th post, a different pair with lower grades of 40 and 25 recently sold for $6,600 (including buyer's premium).

Attention: Zegers/Winograd and SilverPicker Submissions

I need your email address!

Despite various appeals and reminders, the majority of people who submitted their serial number(s) prior to October 2021 still have not submitted their email address. These individuals are marked as "no email" in my database's comment column. This applies to both people who submitted serial numbers through the old Zegers/Winograd project and through SilverPicker's website.

Rather than re-submit your serial numbers and contact information, I have created a new form which requires as little as 2 pieces of information, although filling out all 4 sections would help me further.  The form can be found here: https://bit.ly/AddYourEmail2013

Note: I take email privacy VERY seriously.  Your name and email address will never be shown publicly.  The only person it will potentially be shared with is with the bill owner who has a bill with a matching serial number to your bill's serial number.  Even in the case of matching serial numbers (a matched pair), your email will only be shared with the other bill owner after they submit photo proof that they actually have ownership of the matching banknote.

Why the urgency

The answer is threefold.

Firstly, there are 'lurkers' who have never registered their bill, they come to see the list, see that their serial number has no match, then leave and potentially never come back.

Secondly, there are probably some people who first submitted their serial number(s) to the defunct Zegers/Winograd project (or through the SilverPicker website) and think that their contact info was automatically transferred to Project 2013B. That is NOT the case. At the start of Project 2013B, the previous list owner did NOT hand over any email addresses citing 'privacy concerns'.

Thirdly, people who submitted their serial numbers to the Zegers/Winograd project have essentially been ABANDONED by the previous list owner. Up until recently, whenever there was contact information missing for one or both of the bills of a newly found matching pair, I would contact the previous list owner to see if he still had the contact information for that bill's owner. If he had contact info, he would inform the bill owner and that person would then contact me.  That courtesy has been revoked.

Despite my urge to go fully nuclear, I am restraining myself from airing dirty laundry and posting emails of what went down.  I can honestly say I have lost a bit of trust with people in general over this.

If I were to add a 4th reason, I would say I am disappointed every time I have to tell someone that there is a matching bill to their serial number but that I do not have the contact information for that bill's owner. Sometimes the contact information turned out to be a dud email address that bounced (has happened several times on the submissions from the SilverPicker website for whatever reason).

How do I know if you have my email address?

There are two ways to find out.  You can go to the "Missing in Action" page which is located at https://project2013b.blogspot.com/p/are-you-mia.html and look for your Owner ID.

OR...

You can search the database (pdf file) for your Owner ID, or better yet, your bill's serial number as described below. This process is easiest to do on a desktop computer though not impossible on a phone. The database/list is a PDF file that is over 1300 pages long.

1) Goto my website bit.ly/2013bill and scroll down to the bottom of the page where you will find the various navigation buttons... click on THE LIST

pick me! pick me!

2) Once you are on the webpage that has the list, you will scroll down to where you see the first page of the list, and from there click on the checkbox that has the arrow inside to expand the list so it takes up the whole screen (it will open a new browser window).

Expand that puppy

3) Search for one of your serial numbers that you submitted (use Control F on a desktop computer).

4) Assuming no typos, and that your serial number is in the list, your number will be highlighted on the page it resides on.

5)  If the last column (comments) of the row your serial number is on, show "No Email" then it means I do not have your contact information (email address).  You will need to use this form to update your information.

6) Share the link with other bill owners you might know. The addresss for the form to add your contact information is:  https://bit.ly/AddYourEmail2013

Website Updates and New Features

I was just an innocent list owner...

The transition away from relying too heavily on Google spreadsheets is now complete.  As of this date, Google STILL HAS NOT responded to my appeal in which they made an error in flagging my Database spreadsheet as 'Spam', making it unviewable to members.

The Database (also known as the "Serial Number List") is now in its permanent home on the website at http://bit.ly/3KNpX3I
It is also accessible on the website wherever you see the Database button:
2013B Serial Number Database
The new Database is a PDF file that can be viewed on the website. It can be expanded to be full-screen size, at which point you have the option to download the PDF to your computer.

GameChanger? A one-stop shop for selling a matched pair!

"Next up for bid is this duplicate serial number production error!"

Quite often when two individuals are informed by Project 2013B that they each own one-half of a matched pair, their is confusion (particularly among non collectors) as to what the next steps should be, or even how much their bill is worth. I have always left negotiations up to the two parties involved.

Today, I am pleased to offer this set of instructions for selling which involves much LESS 'trusting the other guy', and will truly fetch you a price of what your bill is really worth. Of course this process is for cases where both owners want to sell the matched pair, but it could also be a viable alternative where negotiations are at some impasse. I have reached out to other auction houses several times to come up with a step-by-step process that one could follow, but unfortunately we never heard back. Fortunately the auction house GreatCollections did respond, and we now have a process to follow!  Best of all, the grading of each bill in included; it's like a one-stop shop.
Most of these steps document the real life experience of two owners who submitted their bills to the auction house GreatCollections. At the time of writing (March 2023), both banknotes are currently at the grading stage. Apparently the grading companies that certify and grade banknotes have a backlog of anywhere from 60 to 120 days!

The step-by-step instructions can be found at this link: INSTRUCTIONS

These instructions will be provided in all future notifications to members whose bill is found to be part of a newly discovered matched pair in the database.

Temporary Database is up and running

Stupid Robot

Late last night I got a notice from Google...
Your file may violate Google Drive's Terms of Service
2013BstarDatabase contains content that may violate Google Drive's Spam policy. Some features related to this file may have been restricted. If you think this is an error and would like the Trust & Safety team to review this file, request a review below....
Restricted file
2013BstarDatabase
Breaking it down, Google (probably their software or some automated BOT)  somehow flagged  this spreadsheet/database as 'SPAM'. While it is still viewable by me (the file owner), it will not show up for anyone else.  Fortunately I had the foresight to keep my master copy off of the internet (what you see online is just a copy).

I have requested a REVIEW of their decision but apparently this could take FIVE DAYS (and probably not counting weekends).
Continue sending in your submissions and I will update the database offline until  this situation is resolved.  Alerting you by email when a matching serial number is found in the database will continue and is unaffected by this Google situation with the online database.

I have set up a TEMPORARY database at http://bit.ly/3ZaTHvW

Updates about this situation will be posted both at a TEMPORARY Database and on my website https://project2013b.blogspot.com/

All-points Bulletin: October 2022

All-points bulletin by the Po-Po circa 1987

Followers of this blog are well aware of my posts featuring the times that a pair of matching serial numbers are discovered in the database and photos collected as proof. What you may not be aware of is what I call the 'Matchmaking' phase in which I contact the two note holders, with varying rates of success. There have been cases where I have used 4 different email addresses in hopes that at least one doesn't end up in the recipients spam folder. Then there is the possibility that the registered user entered a secondary email address that they rarely check.

As a more thorough approach of getting in contact with note holders, I will now periodically post ALL of the current potential matching pairs that are in my queue. Emphasis on potential, as there are cases where 1 or more note holders have not responded in months (if ever), or as in one case literally lost their bill. If you see your user ID or serial number in the following table, please contact me here: CONTACT

The following table can also be found in the online database (spreadsheet) under the worksheet tab labelled Matchmaking.

One of my contacts lamented that the possible rarity of a matched pair will diminish as more matches are made.  I disagree.  Even with a website, and a driven individual running it, a match discovered in the database is no assurance that the pair of bills will ever come together. A bill can be lost, an email address could be dead, or in some cases, I have united the two bill holders only for them to reach a stalemate in which the price one of the parties was willing to sell for was too high.  Time is also on our side....

According to the Federal Reserve, the average lifespan of a dollar bill is 6.6 years.

When currency is deposited with a Federal Reserve Bank, the quality of each note is evaluated by sophisticated processing equipment. Notes that meet our strict quality criteria--that is, that are still in good condition--continue to circulate, while those that do not are taken out of circulation and destroyed. This process determines the lifespan of a Federal Reserve note.

The last of the series 2013B star notes were printed as late as 2016, so you could argue that roughly half have already been destroyed.
