Matched Pair of Star Notes Auctioned for $1,644 – A Remarkable Numismatic Journey

The auction for this rare matched pair of star notes closed with a final bid of $1,644

The matched pair of star notes, first discovered in the Project 2013B database, has found a new home through an exciting auction, closing at $1,644. This exceptional discovery began when Project 2013B identified the two rare notes within its extensive database and connected the two separate owners, recognizing the unique opportunity to unite the banknotes. Through careful coordination, the pair was graded and eventually listed for auction, drawing significant interest from collectors eager to secure this rare combination. A total of 17 auction house members were tracking this auction, and the listing racked up 630 views. The opening bid of $500 was quickly matched, with the price rapidly jumping to $1,550 before a last-minute bid pushed it up to $1,644. After the auction house's buyer's fee, the final price paid by the buyer was $1,849.50.

Project 2013B proudly announces its 28th matched pair of 2025, marking the 171st confirmed match of matched pair dollar bills since this groundbreaking project launched in 2021. With a growing community of 18,101 members involved in currency collecting, 19 new participants joined since the last confirmed match — expanding our reach and increasing the likelihood of identifying more rare error currency examples..

Celebrating Our 28th Matched Pair of Rare Dollar Bills this year

The first note, printed in Washington, DC, was submitted in 2022 by member BoeOf, a dedicated collector with 90 serial number submissions. Its matching note, printed at the Fort Worth facility, was registered in 2025 by member GZWgV, who has submitted 21 serials so far.

One of these unique banknotes surfaced in Georgia, while its pair was located in Montana — a remarkable reminder of how rare currency pairs can surface anywhere across the United States.
