Matched Pair 05445594 up for auction

Starting price of $4988

Matched Pair 05445594 is up for auction on Ebay at the following link: Ebay  The pair was brought together by Project 2013B back on February 11th, and is the first pair I know of to be certified with the "Project 2013B" annotation on the PMG label.

Auction ends in 8 days

Here's the blog post where Project 2013B first confirmed the discovery of the matched pair, back when the bills were owned by two people that were strangers to each other: https://project2013b.blogspot.com/2023/02/confirmed-match-sn-b-05445594.html

GameChanger? A one-stop shop for selling a matched pair!

"Next up for bid is this duplicate serial number production error!"

Quite often when two individuals are informed by Project 2013B that they each own one-half of a matched pair, their is confusion (particularly among non collectors) as to what the next steps should be, or even how much their bill is worth. I have always left negotiations up to the two parties involved.

Today, I am pleased to offer this set of instructions for selling which involves much LESS 'trusting the other guy', and will truly fetch you a price of what your bill is really worth. Of course this process is for cases where both owners want to sell the matched pair, but it could also be a viable alternative where negotiations are at some impasse. I have reached out to other auction houses several times to come up with a step-by-step process that one could follow, but unfortunately we never heard back. Fortunately the auction house GreatCollections did respond, and we now have a process to follow!  Best of all, the grading of each bill in included; it's like a one-stop shop.
Most of these steps document the real life experience of two owners who submitted their bills to the auction house GreatCollections. At the time of writing (March 2023), both banknotes are currently at the grading stage. Apparently the grading companies that certify and grade banknotes have a backlog of anywhere from 60 to 120 days!

The step-by-step instructions can be found at this link: INSTRUCTIONS

These instructions will be provided in all future notifications to members whose bill is found to be part of a newly discovered matched pair in the database.

Did it really sell for $25,000? The curious case of SN 05861487

A while back I mentioned (HERE) a matching pair of 2013B star notes was being auctioned on Ebay for a whopping $25,000. Apparently the listing was pulled, as the following screenshot shows:

From what I can tell using the 'Wayback Machine', the listing was started (or at least was new) on September 11th, when it was going for $29,995. My blog mentioned the listing on September 25th after a reader of this blog gave me the heads up that he spotted this listing. At that time the price had been cut down to $25,000. I tried to figure out when the listing was pulled but I was unable to find that info.

Fast forward to November 26th and CoinWorld posts an article (Here) in which THEY stated the matching pair "sold in a verified eBay transaction for $25,000 on Oct. 9".  Well, if it did, it must of been outside of Ebay because otherwise the listing would show up when doing a search for sold items, and also when I clicked on the original listing link, it should say "sold" and not "This listing was ended". CoinWorld article states the seller "provided documentation of the sale.", but does not specify what that documentation was.

The only possible scenerio is the matching pair sold for $25,000 but did so outside of ebay, which could be against Ebay rules if a buyer or seller contacted the other through the Ebay listing and agreed to end the listing and do a deal on the side (outside of Ebay). Another possibility is the seller legitimately pulled their listing, and a few days (?) later a customer strolled into their coinshop, saw the matching pair, and simply had to have it for $25,000. Who know... maybe it did sell for $25,000, but I have severe doubt it was done one Ebay.

Now it gets weirder.

A seller with a feedback rating of (1)... which is always a case for exercising caution on Ebay...   SOLD the same exact matching pair on November 26th.  It was a 7 day listing, so it was posted November 19th.  The winning bid was $4,504. Here is a screenshot:

What is PECULIAR is this seller's single feedback was from the same seller who apparently sold the same matching pair on October 9th for $25,000.  The feedback was from 6 months ago, and the seller who gave the feedback chose not to make their feedback private (an option in which ebay replaces your Ebay nickname with random characters and asterisks).

More suprising is that the pair sold for only $4504.  Assuming somone really did buy this matching pair on October 9th for $25,000 (according to CoinWorld), and did not sell the note to anyone else between October 9th and November 19th, then they managed the impressive feat of experiencing a loss of 81.98%, or $20,496!

But fear not readers!  If you feel like you have missed out on this drama, a different Ebay seller, has a matching pair (different serial number) up for sale for a staggering $50,000.  Check out that listing (HERE).  Here's a picture of that listing in living color:

We live in interesting times.  My advice to BOTH buyers and sellers is if the item has a value above $2000, it is best to go with a more trustworthy auction site, like Heritage Auction, Great Collections, or Lyn Knight Auctions.  All of the ones mentioned will have a LOT more currency collectors in their bidding audience, and many with very deep pockets. These are the kind of auction houses that specialize in high value collectibles... the kind of rare banknotes that have $100,000 reserves.

January 27th Update:
Now a 2nd YouTube video (by "Old Money Prices") that is suspicious of the activity around these sales. Kudos to the video creator for noticing that both the first sale and the second sale were from the same town. Saint Augustine Florida, with a population of 14,500.

Buddy, can you spare $25,000?

If you ever wanted to own your own matching pair of duplicate serial number 2013B star notes, that can be achieved now at Ebay for $25,000.  It is not an auction, but a "Buy It Now" listing.   Should it sell at the price listed, it would be the highest price paid for a matching pair.

The listing can be seen here:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/134219419130

A 3rd matched pair up for auction! SN 07488905

A 3rd matched pair up for auction! Serial Number 07488905 matched pair, where both bills were brought together through Project 2013B, is now on Ebay with a starting bid price set at $4900. This marks the first matched pair put up for auction from the 3rd run of duplicated serial numbers (namely those in the range from 06,400,001 to 09,600,000).

2013B matched pair up for auction

The sale ends in 6 days, on Saturday May 7, 2022.

The record price of $9301.58 set on March 30th were for bills that were graded 66 and 35. The grade for the notes currently up for auction are 65 and 40, so it should be interesting to see if the better grade 2nd note of this pair, makes up for the slightly better graded 1st note of the pair that sold for $9301.58 (I am calling the higher graded note of a matched pair as the 1st note, and the lower graded note of the same pair as the 2nd note, for lack of a better name.)

2nd Matched Pair Sold on Ebay

The 2nd matched pair of 2013B star notes sold on Ebay last night for $3705.00

We are SLOWLY getting a better feel on the value of these matched pairs. When I first learned of the 2013B printing error a few years back, there were some heady prediction as high as $150,000! Well, maybe if both notes were graded 70 EPQ (exceptional paper quality), and the serial number was 00000001.

As these auctions happen, I will update the following table.  This table has been added to the online database and can be found at this link: Auction History
Auction History Table

TIP: If you are new to currency collecting and have a bill in 'like brand new' condition, DO NOT FOLD THE BILL!  As soon as a bill shows evidence of being folded the highest grade it will get is a 58.

Here is the ebay listing once the auction ended:

Another Matched Pair Is Up For Auction

Up for auction is what, as best as I can recall, only the 2nd matched pair ever to be put up for auction. Last month a matched pair sold on Ebay for $9301, but it was indeed the same pair that had sold at the Stacks-Bowers auction the previous year. That pair graded as a 66 and a 35 by PMG, and had sold at Stacks-Bowers for $7200 (including a 20% auction house fee).

The pair being auction now, is a *NEW* pair (the 18th according to my records) with serial number 08221896. This pair was acquire by "CH" (“123collectivity” on Ebay), who then had them graded by PMG. The grades came back as a 58 and 30, so a bit lower than the pair from last months auction, but it should be interesting to see how much the grade impacts the final price. The first bid is already in at $999.99

The Ebay listing for the pair being auctioned can be found at https://www.ebay.com/itm/224939983669

The auction ends in 6 days, on Friday April 22 at 8:17pm (Eastern Time).

The seller,  “123collectivity” on Ebay, graciously sent me these images of his certified bills ahead of the auction.

2013B Star note matching pair sold at auction
As mentioned in the March 21st post (), the matching pair that sold at auction last year for $7200, was being re-sold on Ebay. The final, and winning bid, was $9301.58 US. A few days ago the owner of the bill mentioned that the bills were re-graded and now officially have the "ERROR" designation.

Matching pair up for auction on Ebay

The only auction that I am aware of took place at Stacks-Bowers last year, where a matching pair sold for  $7200 (including a 20% auction fee).  With 8 days to go, this pair already has 26 bids, so it should be interesting where the final price lands at. When I looked a little closer, it turned out this is the SAME matched pair from the Stacks-Bowers auction: Aug 2021 Stacks-Bowers Auction
